Quick answer
Commission = per-lot rate × number of lots, doubled for a round turn (opening plus closing the trade). At $3.50 per side, one standard lot costs $7.00 round-turn. Active traders should add this to spread cost to see their true cost per trade.
What is the Commission Calculator?
How to Use This Calculator
- Enter commission per lot — What does your broker charge? Usually $5-$10 per standard lot. Check if it's round turn (open+close) or per side.
- Input your position size — Trading 0.5 lots? Commission is halved. Trading 3 lots? Tripled.
- Select round turn or per side — Round turn includes both opening and closing. Per side means you pay twice—once to enter, once to exit.
- Add number of trades — Planning 20 trades this week? Multiply to see total commission cost.
- Compare with spread cost — Enter the spread too. See whether commission or spread is eating more of your profits.
Real-World Example
Example 1: Standard lot trade with $7 commission
You trade 1 lot EUR/USD on an ECN account. Broker charges $7 round turn. That's your commission—period. Add maybe 0.2 pip spread ($2) and total cost is $9.
Example 2: Scaling into a position
You enter with 1 lot, add 0.5 lots, add another 0.5 lots. That's 2 lots total. Each entry and exit gets charged. With $7/lot round turn: 3 entries + 1 exit (partial closes complicate this) = $14-$21 depending on how you close.
Example 3: Comparing account types
Broker A: Zero commission, 1.5 pip spread on EUR/USD = $15 cost per lot.
Broker B: $6 commission round turn, 0.3 pip spread = $6 + $3 = $9 cost per lot.
Broker B saves you $6 per lot. Trade 100 lots/month, that's $600 saved.
When to Use
- Comparing brokers — Commission plus spread is your true cost. Compare apples to apples.
- Before scalping — 10-pip targets with $10 cost per trade? Your win rate needs to be insane.
- Calculating break-even — How many pips do you need just to cover costs? Commission calculator tells you.
- Volume discounts — Some brokers cut commission at higher volumes. Calculate if you'd save money trading more.
- End-of-month cost review — 150 trades this month? Multiply by commission to see how much went to the broker.
Common Mistakes
- Ignoring per-side vs round turn — $7 per side means $14 total. $7 round turn means $7 total. Big difference.
- Forgetting mini and micro lots — Commission scales with lot size. 0.1 lots at $7/lot = $0.70, not $7.
- "Zero commission" isn't free — No commission usually means wider spreads. Calculate total cost, not just commission.
- Not factoring commission into R:R — Your 2:1 risk-reward isn't 2:1 after commission. Factor costs into your real expected value.
- Overtrading because "commission is small" — $7 feels small. But 50 trades = $350. It adds up fast.
