Quick answer
Forex profit or loss = pips gained or lost × pip value × lots. A 50-pip winner on one standard lot of EUR/USD ($10 per pip) is +$500. Pips = (exit − entry) ÷ pip size, where pip size is 0.0001 for most pairs and 0.01 for JPY pairs.
What is the Forex Profit & Loss Calculator?
The profit/loss calculator tells you exactly what a trade is worth in actual money. Enter your entry price, exit price, lot size, and it converts the pip movement into dollars (or whatever currency your account uses).
This sounds basic, but cross pairs, exotic pairs, and different lot sizes make mental math unreliable. A 50-pip move on EUR/USD is not the same dollar amount as 50 pips on GBP/NZD.
The Formula
Profit/Loss = (Exit Price - Entry Price) × Lot Size × Contract Size
For pairs not quoted in your account currency, there's an extra conversion step. The calculator handles this automatically.
How to Use This Calculator
Using the P/L Calculator
- Select the pair — Different pairs have different pip values.
- Choose trade direction — Buy or sell. This determines if positive movement = profit.
- Enter entry price — Where you opened the trade.
- Enter exit price — Where you closed or plan to close.
- Input lot size — Your position size.
- Read the result — Profit or loss in your account currency.
Real-World Example
Examples
Example 1: Simple EUR/USD
- Direction: Buy
- Entry: 1.0850
- Exit: 1.0920
- Lot Size: 0.5
- Pips: +70
- Profit: 70 × $5 (0.5 lot pip value) = $350
Example 2: Losing Trade
- Direction: Sell
- Entry: 1.2750
- Exit: 1.2810
- Lot Size: 0.3
- Pips: -60 (market went up, you were short)
- Loss: 60 × $3 = -$180
When to Use
When to Calculate P/L
- Before entering — Know potential profit/loss at your target and stop.
- During trades — Convert current pip movement to dollars.
- Trade journaling — Record actual P/L for each trade in your log.
- Cross pairs — EUR/GBP, AUD/NZD — mental math fails here.
Common Mistakes
P/L Calculation Errors
- Ignoring pip value differences — Not all pairs have $10/pip per lot. JPY pairs and crosses differ.
- Forgetting account currency conversion — EUR account trading USD pairs needs conversion.
- Wrong direction — Buy trade, price goes down = loss. Sounds obvious but people mess this up.
- Not including costs — Raw P/L doesn't include spread, commission, or swap.
